Coconut Tree -

   There are many varieties of coconut trees. They all have a tall graceful trunks topped by a crown light feathery leaves that are 15-17 feet long. The leaves are a yellow-greenish color. The trucks are light gray. The coconut grows in fain forests and other tropical climates. The coconut fruit has a hard outside and white meat under a hollow center which is filled with coconut milk. After the flowers bloom they form into coconuts. it takes about a year or so for the coconut tree to mature. One tree can make 50 nuts. People harvest the coconuts by climbing the tree and cutting down the coconuts. Coconut palm trees grows in hot areas. They normally grows in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific region. In the United States they are found only in Hawaii, the Southern tip of Florida, and Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.  Coconuts have helped some families from the Pacific with shelter, food, drinks, and many other things needed. The trunks of the coconut trees are used to stabilize buildings. People eat the white meat of the coconut and the sap from closed flowers are used to make sugar, vinegar and the alcohol beverage. They drink the liquid for a refreshing drink. Coconuts contain protein, sugar, and vitamins. The dried meat can be used in candies, cake, cookies, and pies.



Toco Toucan:

Species: Toco

   The Toco Toucan is the largest of the toucans. It can grow up to about 24 to 26 inches in lenght. Its beaks is filled with bright orange and black and can get up to 8 inches long. The Toco Toucan weighs about 10 to 17 ounces. The Toucan's beaks has a hard outside and a hollow inside. They have a bight blue patch around there eye. The Toco Toucan feet and toes are strong so it can support its weight. Two of there toes point forward and two point backwards. Its tongue is some what like a feather and is about six inches long. Its wings are short and round. It also has a long broad tail. Its mostly black with a couple of white, scarlet and yellow spots. Toucans breed once a year and have two to four shiny white eggs. The Toco Toucan nestlings are born without feathers and are blind. Both parents care for their babies and protect and feed them till about seven weeks. Toucans usally live in groups called flocks. They live in nests that are holes in the trees. They talk to each other using toad like noises. They also take turns cleaning each other's feathers with their beaks. They eat fruit seeds, insects and spiders.  The Toco Toucan is a predator. It hunts lizards and snakes and steals eggs and nestlings from smaller birds. The Toco toucan is not endangered because it's able to adapt to man made habitats when the rain forests are destroyed.

  • Tropical Rain Forest Biome -

The tropical rain forest is a forest filled with tall trees and a warm temperature all year-round. An average of 50 to 260 inches of rain falls yearly. Rain forests belong to the tropical wet climate group. The temperature in a rain forest gets higher than 93 °F or drops below 68 °F ; average humidity is between 77 and 88%. There is usually a small season when it rains less then normal. Almost every rain forest is near the equator. Rainforest's now cover less then 6% of the Earth's land. Tropical rain forests gives off 40% of the earths oxygen. The tropical rain forest has more plants then any other area in the world. 70% of the plants in the rain forest contain of trees.
